A spot of vintage sewing.

I'm nervous. A wee bit scared even. I need to be brave. Big deep breath, jump in!

You see my brother in law is to wed the gorgeous Miss Marina at the end of August and they have asked if our wee ones can be a part of the ceremony. The kids are very excited - as am I - I LOVE weddings! Miss Marina has sourced her bridesmaids dresses from Etsy, eBay and op-shops; vintage numbers in varying shades of green I hear. Fantastic. I love this - three of my passions all rolled into one: op-shopping, reusing/recycling, and vintage dresses! Whats not to love?

My wee ones are to be vintage clad too - new garments from vintage patterns. Vintage patterns. Oh how I love thee. Not too many people know that I actually collect vintage sewing patterns. I pull them out occasionally and look them lovingly over, smile a lot, get nostalgic and imagine the garments I may one day make from them. When I find vintage sewing patterns in the op-shop I get a little flutter of excitement and I can't stop from taking them home with me. I once spent about an hour on the floor of an op-shop in Canberra sorting through a box of old patterns and left later with no less than 20 patterns under my arm. Vintage sewing patterns. My passion.

But ah... I've been asked to sew my wee ones outfits for the wedding. I'm petrified. I know, I've sewn, I sew, I'm not bad at sewing, heck I used to sell the cloth nappies and covers I made and was always complimented on my product. But these are vintage kids clothes, from real vintage patterns, with real fabrics of silk and such. And they will be on display. Photographed. Admired. Critiqued. I'm scared. What if my skills don't cut it? What if they don't fit properly. What if they fall apart... what if... what if... what if...

I can do it. I can. I will. Heck - I have to - the fabric is here and the patterns are en route! Eek! I'm allowed to pick which dress I make for my wee girl... which would you choose?

  1. Can't wait to see them.

    They will be marvelous.

I love the vintage style, but you know I can't sew so that is the end of that.

  2. The boy's pattern is too small... too small for my limited talent to adjust too :-(

Good news is I'm almost half way through the girls! Yay!
